Italian Luca Guadagnino received the Silver Lion for Best Direction for ‘Bones and All’
Laura Poitras’ documentary ‘All the Beauty and the Bloodshed’, which examines the opioid crisis in the United States, won the Golden Lion at the 79th Venice Film Festival yesterday. The film tells the story of photographer Nan Goldin, queen of the New York underground in the 1970s and 1980s and a woman who fought the opioid epidemic, whose abuse has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
The jury, chaired by American actress Julianne Moore, awarded Australian Cate Blanchett as best actress for her brilliant performance as the conductor in Todd Field’s film ‘TAR’, a drama about abuse of power. It marks the second time Venice has honored the acclaimed actress, 53, who puts her fame and talent at the service of the feminist struggle, following Todd Haynes’ “I’m Not There,” a film in which she gave birth to fifteen years of another musician, Bob Dylan.
Italian Luca Guadagnino received the Silver Lion for Best Direction for ‘Bones and All’. An oppressed Iranian filmmaker imprisoned in his country, Jafar Panahi once again outsmarted his guards by winning the special jury prize for his film ‘No Bears’, a film that mimics the life of a persecuted artist.
Colin Farrell won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for his role in Martin McDonagh’s ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’. Thanks to this film, the filmmaker won the prize for best screenplay. The film tells of toxic masculinity, war, intellectual arrogance and the desire to find meaning in life.
