Ten titles for curious and passionate readers

Date:

Novelties in the field of crime, romantic, historical, comic, theatrical and poetry novels, from the selection of various booksellers and publishers

How hard is it for a bookseller or publisher to choose one from all the titles that it displays in its booth to its potential readers, the audience that comes to the Murcia Book Fair, installed on Paseo Alfonso X el Sabio until October 12th.

Those responsible for ten of the booths at the fair did this arduous and sometimes embarrassing exercise of recommending a book to each of them to LA VERDAD readers. Noir, romantic, historical, comic, theater or poetry novels for lovers who want to be surprised.

Starting with the strip ‘Chaplin in America’ by David François and Laurent Seksik, the bet is made by Rubén Soriano, representative on the stock exchange of the Valencian publishing house Sargantana. A book that arrives in Spain with Desfiladero Ediciones and that begins with Charles Chaplin’s first trip to New York. “He follows in the footsteps of his father, who was dedicated to the artistic world.” The comic tells the birth of the character Charlot in Hollywood through illustrations “in a French style” reminiscent of “Montmartre at the beginning of the 20th century”.

The last century is also reflected in ‘Victoria comes to dinner’, a play by the author from Elche Olga Mínguez Pastor, which is now in its fifth edition. “We decided to publish the book and then came the performance of the work, a tour of Spain,” explains Miguel Ángel de Rus of Ediciones Irreverentes. In particular, this text reflects the debate Victoria Kent and Clara Campoamor have had on women’s suffrage in the Second Republic.

Mexican Aurelio Fernández Fuentes wanted to investigate the life of his great-grandfather, Abelardo Saavedra Toro, an anarchist educator from Spain who was banned, tried and imprisoned several times for his social struggles. The result of his work is reflected in ‘Saavedra, an anarchism’. The book can be found in the booth of the Fondo de Cultura Económica, the publisher of the government of Mexico based in Spain.

Jumping from continent to continent, they recommend a walk through the past via ‘Ethiopian Fables of the Guyi Tradition’ from the booth of publishing house Mundo Negro. Pedro Pablo Hernández is the author of this book, with illustrations by Francis Martín, which contains 25 classic stories from the oral tradition that have now been translated to paper.

The ONCE booth will inform its visitors about the new titles available in braille or audiobook format that can be purchased through the club.once.es website. Tongolele Didn’t Know How To Dance is one of the newest additions to the catalog. Sergio Ramírez, Cervantes Prize 2017, returns to the noir genre with a novel about Nicaragua and the end of the dream of the revolution. The Murcia Romantica association is an expert in falling in love through letters. From her booth, Alba Cayuela recommends ‘Oro’, the first part of the ‘Reyes Magos’ trilogy, by the Murcian author Judith Romero. Pure fantasy “for adults”, with magic and adventures around the figure of Melchor.

‘No kissing?’ is about love and the different ways of loving, a children’s book by Anne Hassel and Eva Künzel, which introduces this topic to the little ones in a simple way through illustrations of animals. This volume is one of the favorites of Teresa Díaz, of the Murcian online bookstore Encuéntame.

Psychologists Ana Peinado and Enrique Garcés de los Fayos use literature as a tool to manage emotions. His new book, ‘La senda del alma’, is an approach to mourning loss, accompanied by inspiring illustrations by Javi Soto. The book can be found in the booth ‘Ana Peinado. Literature and Emotions’.

From Valparaíso, Ediciones invites the reader to enter the poetry of Jesús Pacheco from Murcia. The author is the latest winner of the VII Valparaíso Poetry Prize with the collection of poems ‘Todos los cuerpo, el cuerpo’, defined by Luis Bagué Quílez as “an ecstasy labyrinth”.

From the Murcian publisher headed by Javier Castro Florez, Newcastle Ediciones, they recommend his latest title, published a few days ago: ‘Ruido y echo’, by Ricardo Álamo. A “notebook” that functions as a diary in which you can find “the evocation of a distant childhood summer, the adventures of a young student in a northern city, reflections on growing old…”.

Recommendations in a day of the fair, yesterday, where the authors under the pseudonym Carmen Mola were protagonists. Jorge Díaz, Antonio Mercero and Agustín Martínez from Lorca visited LA VERDAD’s booth to sign copies of their latest release, ‘Las madres’ (Alfaguara), a novel they presented in the event pavilion of the fair.
