Now it is certain: FPÖ club president Mario Kunasek will be handed over to the judiciary, all parties have agreed to lift his parliamentary immunity. The investigation into the FPÖ’s financial case against him can therefore start soon.
All parties – including the PVV itself – had announced in advance that they would agree to the extradition request of the prosecutor. As the “Krone” discovered, this was also the case in the constitutional committee of the state parliament on Tuesday afternoon. The green light was unanimous.
“Refuse accusations as soon as possible”
The three FPÖ members on the committee, Mario Kunasek himself and Stefan Hermann and Gerald Deutschmann, also agreed. “It should be noted that Mario Kunasek wants to refute all allegations as quickly as possible and therefore naturally supported the withdrawal himself. Nothing stands in the way of quickly clarifying all allegations. The PVV and Mario Kunasek will continue to focus on transparency, education and full cooperation with the authorities,” said a statement from the FPÖ.
Serious allegations from the public prosecutor
It is about the financial scandal of the FPÖ Graz, which came to the public after the 2021 municipal elections. Up to 1.8 million euros in club funds are said to have been embezzled and several suspects are being investigated. The responsible public prosecutor in Klagenfurt now suspects Kunasek of having contributed: he would not have stopped the events in Graz. He is also accused of giving false testimony during a police interrogation last year and withholding evidence. The presumption of innocence applies to the president of the FPÖ club.
Next week, the request for extradition will be considered in the session of the state parliament, and again all parties are likely to agree. After the decision in the state parliament, this decision is forwarded to the public prosecutor’s office by the president of the state parliament, Manuela Khom.
