He knows what he’s talking about: Richard Cieslar is a primary school teacher at one of Vienna’s 120 hotspot schools. In a conversation with Conny Winiwarter, he made it clear: “The integration has failed, while we had decades to do it.” Verbal abuse is the order of the day at his school and the transfer of knowledge is hampered by insufficient knowledge of German.
Somehow the German remedial classes are “not up to date”, the children would only be “busy” there. In addition, the “TikTok generation”, as Cieslar calls them, has a big problem: “They can’t remember anything longer than 30 seconds.”
Why does no one want to be a teacher?
Sounds dramatic – and frustrating: “I try to teach the children something, but it doesn’t work”, Cieslar understands why fewer and fewer people choose the teaching profession. What is needed is an “almost constant double occupancy” in the classrooms. Only then can one really work in an integrative way.
„integration failed“
Speaking of integration: according to the US teacher in Vienna, it failed miserably. “If it is possible that people who have lived in Vienna for decades do not speak German, then something has gone wrong.” Politicians would have had “decades” to take measures that work. According to Cieslar, that did not happen. Is it the children or the system? Cieslar: “Partly, partially.”
“Insults are the order of the day”
Violence is also on the rise: mutual abuse is “the order of the day” at his troubled school, but he has “almost never experienced physical violence in his day job”. school: “Parents interested in their children’s development send their children to private schools.”
Other explosive statements, such as why it bothers the teacher that the children in Vienna get a free lunch and what aftermath the corona pandemic has left behind, can be seen in the video above.
