Podemos refuses to participate in Catalan elections to “avoid fragmenting the left”

Date:

“At a time of uncertainty and political instability in Catalonia, we choose not to participate in the fragmentation of the left, because this only benefits the right and the far right,” Podem Catalunya explains.

The leadership of Podem Catalunya has decided not to stand as a candidate in the Catalan elections of May 12, so as not to contribute to the “fragmentation of the left”, and will subject its decision to consultation with the armed forces.

After sharing a parliamentary group with Catalonia common in Parliament, under the brand name In Comú Podemthis coalition will not be able to be repeated in the 12 million elections, for which the commons have already elected Jéssica Albiach as head of the list and are preparing their candidacies.

“Faced with a moment of uncertainty and political instability in Catalonia, we choose not to participate in the fragmentation of the left, because this only benefits the right and the far right. That is why, in exercising our responsibility to the Catalan citizens, we have decided not to do that. participate in the regional elections on May 12,” Podem said in a statement.

The deadline for registering electoral coalitions ends Saturday morning, but Podemos has considered Comuns “point” to their ‘historic alliance’, having attended together the rest of the previous appointments in the elections, and they refuse to repeat a joint candidacy again.

Recently, the Catalan formation led by Ada Colau indicated that they remain with the door open regarding alliances with Podemos, although they made it clear that the coalition option was complicated, especially after the break with Sumar and his decision to go alone to the elections to go. European elections.

In this sense, they have emphasized that Podem Catalunya, the Podemos brand in Catalonia, given the electoral progress, has chosen to explore the “best possible agreements” to guarantee a new “clearly” left-wing government.

In this regard, their priority was to try to reach an agreement with Comuns, but Podemos regrets that the attitude of their hitherto Catalan partner makes it impossible “impossible”.

In this way, the party led by Ione Belarra will focus this election cycle on the elections for the Basque Parliament and the European elections in June, the last elections in which it will participate with the former Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, as a candidate. .
