After gas storage has recently fallen significantly, the federal government will advise on the current situation and how to proceed on Tuesday. At 2 p.m., Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler will provide information about the deliberations. Chancellor Karl Nehammer has convened the National Security Council at 6 p.m.
Gewessler recently described the situation as “serious”. On March 30, Austria announced the early warning phase of the three-stage gas emergency plan. Two weeks ago, Germany raised the level of alarm after Russian state-owned company Gazprom halted deliveries to Europe in mid-June. Austria could also switch to the alert level. On Friday, the Ministry of Energy said that if the autumn storage target is compromised, “the alert level will also be declared in Austria”.
Nehammer wants to inform about “planned steps”.
It was recently announced that the National Security Council will also meet in the evening. “The federal government will report on the current situation and planned steps. In recent days, there has been intensive consultation with the federal government about the gas supply,” said the Chancellor’s Office. In addition to Nehammer and Gewessler, Economic Affairs Minister Martin Kocher and opposition representatives are also taking part in the meeting.
The FPÖ had also recently called for the commission to be convened. According to information from krone.at, the consultations could last well into the night. A result can therefore probably only be expected in the morning hours.
