Copenhagen, Sevilla’s rival in Champions group G, was fired this Tuesday to his coach Jess Thorup, after last Sunday’s defeat against Midtjylland, the sixth in ten league games. On September 14, Sevilla tied at home with the Danish team (0-0).
Thorup, 52, arrived at the club in November 2020 and made it champions last season, in addition to qualifying for the Champions group stage for the first time in six years.
However, the reigning Danish champions had their worst start to the season for many years and is now in ninth place with 12 points, ten behind the leaders and just three above relegation.
Thorup’s possible dismissal has been rumored for some time: the tie at home against Sevilla gave him a breatherbut an away defeat against Midtjylland, the club he turned into league champions in 2018, was decisive.
His successor in the position will be his assistant until now, Jacob Neestrup, 34 years old, former coach of Danish Viborg and has been at the club for a year and a half.
Copenhagen, third tied on one point with Sevilla in the Champions League, will face a double confrontation against Manchester City, before his visit to Sánchez Pizjuán on October 25. This is the classification of group G: 1. Manchester City, 6 points; 2. Borussia Dortmund, 3; 3. Copenhagen, 1; 4. Seville, 1.
