A sum of 41 Spanish athletes will compete in Madeira (Portugal), between April 21 and 27, in the European Paralympic Swimming Championshipswith the aim of sealing their participation in Paris Paralympic Games. The competition will bring together around 400 participants from fifty countries.
The largest group consists of representatives of Spanish Federation of Sports for People with Physical Disabilities (FEDDF)23: Teresa Perales, Sarai Gascón, Nuria Marqués, Anastasiya Dmytriv, Nahia Zudaire, Beatriz Lérida, Leyre Ortí, Toni Ponce, Íñigo Llopis, Óscar Salguero, Miguel Luque, Xavi Torres, Vicente Gil, David Levecq, José Antonio Mar , Jacobo Garrido, Luis Huerta, Carlos Martínez, Sergio Martos, David Sánchez, Ariel Schrenck, Jian Wang Escanilla and Marco Ozaeta.
Eleven swimmers belong to Spanish Federation of Sports for the Blind (FEDC): María Delgado, Ariadna Edo, Marian Polo, Emma Feliú. Iván Salguero, José Ramón Cantero, Enrique Alhambra, Juan Ferrón, Mammadouh Dambelleh, Borja Sanz and Álex Villarejo.
The others The Spanish Sports Federation of People with Cerebral Palsy and Acquired Brain Injury (FEDPC) contributes seven members to the team: Marta Fernández, Daniel Ferrer, Alejandro Rojas, Mikel Erdozáin, Delia Fontcuberta, Jaime Montero and Jorge Palau.
Some of these athletes are part of AXA Paralympic Swimming Promising Team, an initiative aimed at helping young people with greater projections to reach high levels. These are Mahamadou Dambelleh, Jian Wang Escanilla, Beatriz Lérida, Jaime Montero and Álex Villarejo.
31 places for Paris
Spain secured a total of 31 swimming spots for next summer’s Games, 12 girls and 19 boys. For now, they are nine athletes who achieved the minimum A grade which ensures its presence in Paris:
Nuria Marquès, Toni Ponce, Íñigo Llopis, Anastasiya Dmytriv, Nahia Zudaire and Berta García (FEDDF); María Delgado and Iván Salguero (FEDC), and Marta Fernández (FEDPC).
In minimum grade B, which allows access to the quota of places not completed by the minimum A, 13 will appear; Luis Huerta, Jacobo Garrido, Sarai Gascón, José Antonio Marí, Beatriz Lérida, David Sánchez and Teresa Perales (FEDDF); Emma Feliú, Álex Villarejo, Albert Gelis, Marian Polo and Enrique Alambra (FEDC), and Daniel Ferrer (FEDPC). The deadline to accredit these brands ends on June 16.
This European Championship will be held in Funchal (Madeira) for seven days of competition. As usual in Paralympic swimming, the qualifying heats will be held in the morning and the finals in the afternoon.
