Outrage among the regional canoe family over the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) decision not to allow the II Segura River Canoe Race to be held today in Blanca. On July 13, the President of the Canoe Federation of the Region of Murcia, César Reales, sent a letter requesting permission for a navigation event from the Blanca Iron Bridge, a navigable part of the Segura River Code SE-7, to the entrance to the Ojós reservoir.
Everything was fine, but a week later, the CHS reported that “the requested activity is not allowed by this agency, so cannot be performed.” The CHS states that “in the Azud de Ojós, navigation is prohibited due to the strong water level fluctuations, due to the function of regulating water for irrigation and supply, and navigation is not allowed in the 500-meter section directly above the reservoir.
It also states that “this navigation has its own protocol, taking into account the special conditions of economic exploitation to which it is subject, allowing only navigation for profit and with the assignment of a specific point of departure.”
The president of the canoe club of Blanca, Jesús Ramos, expressed his surprise at the decision of the CHS. “There were 120 canoeists registered from Lugo, Valencia, Cuenca and Murcia and this is a disaster for us,” he said.
