New plug-in engines for the BMW 7 Series

Date:

There will be two plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants and a mild hybrid variant in the range, including the first BMW M model in the 7 Series family.

The successful launch of the fully electric BMW i7 is now followed by the arrival of two plug-in hybrids,
including a BMW M model, as well as a mild-hybrid version. The drive systems of the two plug-in hybrid models combine a six-cylinder in-line engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. In both cars, the power of the two engines is channeled to the road via the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system.

The electric motor fitted to both models features the latest generation of BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid models. The synchronous motor with a specific power of more than 5.0 kW/kg is rated at 197 hp in the two PHEV variants and the rev range has been extended to a maximum of 11,500 rpm.

In addition, a pre-reduction stage is used to increase the torque produced by the electric motor to an effective maximum of 450 Nm at the transmission input on the engine side. This one
innovation, patented and first used by BMWenables the electric drive integrated in the transmission housing in a compact, weight-saving construction to generate the available drive torque alone or in addition to the power developed by the internal combustion engine that can normally only be achieved with a much larger and heavier electric motor.

The optimized power delivery achieved by the pre-acceleration stage between the electric motor’s rotor and the transmission’s input shaft makes a clear difference whether it’s off-line acceleration or a quick burst of speed.

The new BMW M760e xDrive is distinguished by its performance profile, with extra sporty power and an aura of superior dynamics. It is BMW M’s first high-performance car with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The combustion engine is a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, a rated output of 380 hp and a rated torque of 520 Nm. And together with a new electric motor, it generates an output of 571 hp (with temporary supercharging) and a torque of 800 Nm.

The new BMW M760e xDrive accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and completes the average sprint from 80 to 120 km/h in just 2.7 seconds. For example, the BMW M760e xDrive combines powerful performance with the possibility of locally emission-free driving in urban areas and beyond. The M-specific design features, interior equipment and indicators in the cab also perfectly match the sedan’s modern luxury ambience.

In the new BMW 750e xDrive, on the other hand, the new electric drive system is once again accompanied by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine, which this time develops a rated output of 313 hp and a rated torque of 450 Nm. Together, the two power sources produce an output of 490 hp (with temporary boost) and a torque of 700 Nm. As a result, the new BMW 750e xDrive accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and from 80 to 120 km/h in just 2.7 seconds.

The electric motors of the two plug-in hybrid models draw their power from a high-voltage lithium-ion battery installed in the floor of the vehicle, another product of BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive technology. At 18.7 kWh, the usable energy content of the battery is more than 50% higher than that of the previous generation of this technology. The maximum charging power in alternating current is 7.4 kW. Combined with the efficiency of the electric motor and intelligent energy management, including adaptive recuperation, this gives the new BMW M760e xDrive an electric range of 77 – 85 kilometers in the WLTP cycle and the new BMW 750e xDrive a range of 83 – 87 kilometers according to the WLTP.
