Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky accuses Russia of “leaving death everywhere”
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky tonight denounced the discovery of mass graves in Izium, the northeastern city recovered from Russian forces just a few days ago. “The necessary procedural actions have already been initiated,” said the Ukrainian president, who announced that Ukrainian and international journalists will witness the state of the city today.
Zelensky recalled that the state of the city of Izium is comparable to that of other cities such as Bucha or Mariúpol, and has accused Russia of “leaving death everywhere”. “We want the world to know what is really happening and what the Russian occupation has led to. Bucha, Mariupol, now unfortunately Izium… Russia leaves death everywhere. And he should be held accountable for it,” Ukraine’s president said.
A regional police officer, Sergui Botvinov, told Sky News that a cemetery containing some 440 graves has also been found. Some died from the impact of bullets and others from bombing, he added.
In that sense, he has listed more than 3,800 missiles that Russian forces are said to have launched into Ukrainian territory, though he has warned that “no missile will bring Russia closer to its target”. “There will be no submission of Ukraine. Each missile brings Russia closer to greater international isolation, greater economic degradation and an even clearer historical condemnation,” he added.
The Ukrainian president has been visiting the city of Izium since Wednesday to attend a memorial rally, where he attended the official flag ceremony. Raising the flag implies that Ukraine assumes that ‘the enemy is gone’. Kiev estimates the area it has captured from Russian troops in eastern Ukraine in recent weeks at more than 4,000 square kilometers.
