“Beam me up”: this is how quantum teleportation works

Date:

Austria is proud of its Nobel Prize winner Anton Zeilinger. But what does the man actually do? Zeilinger shares the prize with the American John F. Clauser and the Frenchman Alain Aspect. In their groundbreaking experiments, two particles behave as one, even when separated. We show how this works in a simplified image.

So-called quantum teleportation is a very complex subject and not an easy task – especially for non-physicists. The media in particular compares the experiments with “rays” from science fiction films. And there’s a good reason for that: it’s the only way to show that two particles in two distant places without any connection still interact with each other.
