Ukrainian firm Indposhiv Casual has made Masi Nayem the hero of a new campaign that shows the horror of war
From mutilated soldier to model. Ukrainian fashion brand Indposhiv Casual has made 41-year-old Masi Nayem the hero of a new campaign showcasing the horror of war. The company’s founder, Katerina Vozianova, explains that with this step, the company wanted to define itself not only as clothing for self-made men, but also for those who “led our homeland to victory.”
Nayem, lawyer and veteran of the anti-terrorist operation in Donbas, has been fighting on the front lines since April 17 because of the Russian invasion. Two months later, on June 5, he was seriously injured in the head and fell into a coma. The next day he underwent surgery and came to his senses, but lost an eye. “Now I know how much my eye weighs, because I lost ten kilos that day,” he says with humor today. His incident could have plunged him into a black hole, but he decided to move on. And the courage has paid off. Now it is the face of heroism.
Nayem is “grateful” for the fashion house’s invitation, although “I won’t be prettier after all,” he says. “I really like how children react to the absence of an eye. They come with sincerity and say, ‘Look, he’s a pirate.
“Are you ready to die for freedom?” This is the question Nayem asked herself in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This Afghan left Kabul with his family at the age of 6 due to the lack of something very important to him: freedom. “It’s not just about the quality of life in a free country. It’s awareness, choice and action. And a struggle for the will of others,” he declares. Ukraine was his destiny, where freedom was the “choice and way of life is from citizens.
