To strengthen the traditional family, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced steps against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. “Because a strong nation requires a strong family,” Erdogan said Friday, according to state news agency Anadolu. “Lately they’ve been promoting the LGBT community. With LGBT they try to degenerate our family structure.” That’s why you have to do “whatever it takes”.
Erdogan did not name specific names in his accusation – but he probably means Turkish opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who also addresses liberal voter groups. He is being traded as a possible candidate for the presidential election scheduled for June 2023.
Kilicdaroglu immediately responded on Twitter, calling Erdogan a “despot”.
“We’ll slow them down, God willing”
Erdogan made it clear that his hopes for action against LGBT (short for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) are also based on the so-called disinformation law: “With the introduction of this law, we will, God wants to brake hard,” Erdogan said, according to Anadolu.
The Turkish president refers to a planned law that according to the government should prevent disinformation on the internet. The opposition, on the other hand, fears that it will lead to stricter censorship on the internet. The provision has yet to be passed by parliament – on Thursday the parliament approved some articles of the draft law.
