An inmate of Graz-Jakomini Prison is known for its freaks. Yet he enjoys a lot of freedom. Now the situation escalated again.
The 25-year-old prisoner is considered a ticking time bomb. He has a number of previous convictions, including serious property damage, dangerous threats and defiance of state authority. He has already seen inside some prisons – such as the Stein prison (Lower Austria), the Grazer Karlau and now Jakomini prison. He was transferred there because he had recently threatened to kill a guard in Karlau.
Security measures lifted, then it caught fire
In both Stein and Karlau, he was placed with the security department because of his dangerous nature. There is still no such thing in the Jakomini correctional facility. Now the management team also decided to lift the security measures imposed on the 25-year-old last Friday. Until now, he was handcuffed before the cell door was opened.
Situation worse than ever
Just two hours later it became clear again that the prisoner was very dangerous: the alarm went off because he had set fire to his underpants, a sheet and a blanket in the cell! Guards immediately put out and prevented worse.
Enthusiasm among colleagues is now great. “We’ve lost control!” was the reported appeal for help from prison guards in a letter to prison management in July. Since then, the situation has gotten even worse. Regular duty would require about 20 additional officers per day. Instead, more and more people are throwing in the towel.
