The agricultural machinery industry has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in AI research, partnered with robotics start-ups – and now a revolution in agriculture is just around the corner. The first autonomous tractors are coming and in a few years they could even be affordable for small businesses. But the engineering marvels raise questions that farmers have not had to ask in the past.
American supplier John Deere is about to launch the first autonomous tractor. The German manufacturer CLAAS already supplies a robotic agricultural machine with a caterpillar drive, which was developed together with the start-up AgXeed and which can perform a variety of tasks. The first buyers are large companies that can afford it. However, in Japan, research is already underway into affordable technology for smallholder farmers. Until it hits the market, the industry will have to clear up tough questions about ongoing fees and data protection.
