Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko has rejected alleged plans for the ex-Soviet republic to join Russia. “We are not stupid enough to work with the old methods. We, I say, are building such a unity between two independent states that people will learn from us,” he said in Vladivostok on Wednesday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has been repeatedly accused of trying to rebuild the Soviet Union that collapsed more than 30 years ago. He rejects that. Many people in both countries also fear that Russia could annex Belarus, which is completely dependent on it economically.
Lukashenko is currently in Russia’s Far East on the Pacific coast at the invitation of Kremlin chief Putin. Belarus is a major supporter of Russia in the war against Ukraine.
Completely dependent on Russia
Unlike Lukashenko, international political observers consider the possibility of Belarus’ accession to Russia very real. Since the controversial 2020 presidential election, in which Lukashenko declared himself the winner without recognition in the West, Minsk has become increasingly dependent on Moscow. Belarus is now almost completely isolated internationally and dependent on Russia, financially, but also militarily.
