The Congress of Deputies will not hang on its façade a reproduction of the banner that the Spanish deportees unfurled in the Nazi camp of Mauthausen when they were liberated by Allied troops and that read “Anti-fascist Spaniards welcome the liberation forces.” This was decided by the Congress table at its last sitting, on April 5, with votes against PSOE, PP and Vox. The proposal of a group of relatives of the victims of the Nazi camps, who are grouped in the “Blue Triangle” team, was voted in favor of “only we can”, according to parliamentary sources.
The organization, which is part of the Association for the Restoration of Historical Memory, registered the petition on March 23rd to mark the beginning of May and to mark the release of Mauthausen, which occurred on the 5th of the same month. In 1945, Congress hung a copy of the poster. In a written response, the congressional table informed the group that “it is not advisable to grant the request. […]. Given that it does not meet the same established criteria [la Cámara]“.
The Blue Triangle regrets that “the votes of the PSOE, PP and Vox refused to support the proposal and at the same time” rejected the mention of an important event in history, “they said in a statement. The formation did not want “political use of institutions.” “We understand that this is something transverse,” the same sources in the newspaper claim.
The collective Blue Triangle and the Historical Memory Recovery Association have already multiplied the banner into two sizes, six and ten meters, which they claim will be displayed in front of Congress in a rally to “recognize those who sowed the seeds.” Democracy, ”explains Emilio Silva, President of ARMH. More than 9,000 Spanish citizens were deported to Hitler’s terrorist camps. “The memory of the men and women who fought against fascism and never stopped it should be a source of democratic pride for Spain and an exemplary legacy for humanity,” Silva said.
The organizations were very critical of the decision of the congressional table and the parliamentary groups that voted against it: “It seems that some political parties in the Congress of Deputies did not approve of the first major anti-fascism. “It’s the same as getting a bad grade in a democratic culture,” said the ARMH president.
