Russians stole raccoon from Kherson zoo

Date:

According to Ukrainian sources, Russian soldiers systematically looted before leaving the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson. We’re talking home appliances, cell phone towers, artifacts – and a raccoon. A video recorded by the occupiers themselves shows the deed (see above).

In the clip, which appears to have been shot at Kherson Zoo, a Russian soldier grabs the raccoon by the tail and throws the animal into a cage, resisting vigorously. The man in camouflage who grabbed the raccoon turns out to be no stranger. He is believed to be Oleg Zubkov, the Russian director of the Crimean Taigan Zoo.

Llamas and wolves also stole
The raccoon is not the only animal that has been removed from the zoo. Llamas, wolves, donkeys and squirrels were also loaded and taken to Crimea, Ukrainian animal welfare organization UAnimals reports on Facebook.

The footage went viral on social media: the raccoon has been jokingly referred to as a Russian prisoner of war and styled as a hero in numerous memes (see below). Odessa military administration spokesman Sergey Brachuk said in a video that they were ready to exchange the raccoon for 10 captured Russian soldiers.

“The Only Good News”
A Telegram message from Russian blogger Anna Dolgareva is also being laughed at in Ukraine. “I was asked to bring good news from Kherson, but the only really good news is that my comrade was able to steal a raccoon from the Kherson zoo,” she wrote.
