They were and are constantly being warned: we are talking about unscrupulous scammers posing as police officers on the phone and using dubious fairy tales to literally steal money from their chosen victims. In Tyrol, an elderly woman (93) fell for this nasty scam on Thursday – and lost tens of thousands of euros in the process.
Around 8 p.m., the elderly woman from Kematen (Innsbruck-Land district) was contacted by a man on the landline. Posing as a police officer, the stranger pretended to the 93-year-old that two burglars had been caught nearby and that they had found a list of other burglary targets.
Her address is also listed there. To secure their cash, a police officer would come over and take the money.
Envelope with tens of thousands of euros
A short time later, the elderly woman’s doorbell actually rang. A man posing as a criminal entered into conversation with the lady and eventually asked her to reveal the whereabouts of her money. “The 93-year-old then showed the unknown perpetrator the hiding place of the money,” says the real detective.
The stranger photographed the hiding place, grabbed an envelope containing 50,000 euros and then took off.
Only then did the victim become suspicious. The woman filed a report, but the perpetrator had long since left the mountains.
