With nearly 1,000 statements of support in their luggage, a group of special animal lovers protested in the Supreme Court on Wednesday. It’s about wombats – and the zoo in Schönbrunn.
For those unfamiliar with natural history, the wombat is a three-foot-long marsupial that grows wild only in distant Australia and has been listed as an endangered species since the fall. Breeding programs, of which there are also several in Europe, are designed to ensure the continued existence of the no doubt adorable species.
Schönbrunn Zoo is not included. To the chagrin of a group of ‘Wombat activists’ that formed early last year around the well-known Viennese journalist Dominik Schreiber. Until now, the zoo management waved it off. “In addition, it is difficult to understand why the Austrians are denied such a special animal,” says the initiative.
A list of nearly 1,000 statements of support was handed over to the two SPÖ MPs Julia Herr and Mario Lindner on Wednesday. The wombats could thus become a matter for parliament – the zoo is owned by the Republic of Austria…
