A bus rammed into a daycare center in Canada, killing two children. Six other children were injured in the accident in the Quebec town of Laval on Wednesday and have been taken to hospital, rescuers said. As a result, several children were trapped under the bus. The bus driver was arrested on suspicion of “manslaughter and dangerous driving”, the police assume that there was intent.
According to authorities, one child died at the scene of the accident, another in an ambulance. Six other children who have been taken to hospital are “out of danger,” police spokeswoman Erika Landry said. No adults were injured in the incident.
Police: “Don’t know the motive”
The 51-year-old bus driver was arrested on suspicion of “manslaughter and dangerous driving,” Landry said. Officials would assume it was a premeditated act, local police chief Pierre Brochet said. “But we don’t know the motive.” The 51-year-old had been questioned and had no criminal record.
The facility, where between 80 and 85 children are cared for, is located in a cul-de-sac. Photos showed the bus hitting a part of the building that was not on the street or in a parking lot. They also show part of the roof on the front of the bus collapsing.
Witness: ‘He drove towards it on purpose’
“I helped subdue the driver who got off the bus,” a father said on Radio Canada. The witness’s wife, who was also present at the incident, said the driver was “half naked”. The two witnesses said they saw the driver ‘deliberately driving towards the nursery’.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said after the incident that he was “devastated. We all are.” The Premier of the Province of Quebec, François Legault, spoke of a “horrific drama”. “Thinking of the children, the parents and the employees,” he wrote on Twitter. Laval is the third largest city in the Eastern Canadian province of Québec and is located next to the metropolis of Montreal.
