Semir Nafile is from Hatay and works in Neusiedl am See. His family survived the earthquake but lost everything. His old house is just a mess. What he does to help.
Semir Nafile has been in Austria since 1990 and has been running the Pizzeria Rialto in Neusiedl am See since 2005. Six of his siblings still live in Turkey. She and her mother were lucky in their misfortune – they all survived, but their belongings are in ruins.
Lost everything
“My family stayed with friends and acquaintances in Antalya and other places spared by the earthquake,” says the settler. He is happy that they all survived.

But many friends and cousins lost their lives. You hear and see how much it affects him when he talks about it: “90 percent of Antakya, the provincial capital, has been destroyed. Nobody lives there anymore. That is why it is looted. It’s dangerous to stay there. But the residents want to return as soon as possible, to rebuild their city and their lives.”
But first the debris must be cleared away. “My compatriots, including my family, have lost everything. There are so many deaths. It is unspeakably sad,” thinks Semir in his home country. The risk of epidemics is also increasing, because of course the water became polluted during the disaster and the pipes are no longer intact.
Mom wants to stay
In any case, Semir wants to get his mother out of Hatay’s hell. At first she was against it, she did not want to leave her homeland. But now he’s got the 81-year-old to at least come to him until the situation has calmed down. Then she definitely wants to go back to her homeland.
Charity evening for the victims of the earthquake
Semir would now also like to help other compatriots. That is why he organizes an evening for the victims of the earthquake in his pizzeria on February 24. The friends of the Japanese, New Love Projekt & Friends, the Time Bänditz and Bytes & Bites will give a concert from 7 p.m. The donations received and the net proceeds of the evening will go to Hatay.
