On Monday, the regional criminal court imposed pre-trial detention on a 31-year-old who fired a blank pistol at a tram stop in Vienna-Hernals last Saturday and then threatened to kill several passengers.
The man was only sentenced to a suspended sentence by the regional court last Wednesday for attempted bodily harm and illegal possession of weapons. As court spokeswoman Christina Salzborn confirmed, the man had been given a suspended jail sentence at the Gray House on Jan. 25 after assaulting his opponent with brass knuckles during a physical altercation.

That shouldn’t have made much of an impression on him. Just three days later, at Güpferlingstraße station, before boarding tram line 10, he pulled out a pistol and pulled the trigger. In the tram he then threatened a 75-year-old pensioner with a shot in the knee and a 29-year-old man with a shot in the head. Alerted officers of the Ottakring city police arrested the drunken 31-year-old on the tram.
Not a clean slate
The 31-year-old is not a blank slate for the police and judiciary. In June 2020, he was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence for property damage and dangerous threats. The conviction, handed down last week, related to an incident in early August 2022 when he got into an argument with a neighbor in his apartment building. The Public Prosecution Service has already requested that all outstanding sentences that were originally imposed conditionally be withdrawn, reports court spokeswoman Salzborn.
