Slovakia’s largest opposition party has reported to the government that it considers the transfer of fighter jets to Ukraine unconstitutional. The allegations are abuse of office and sabotage. Thirteen aircraft of the Soviet type MiG-29 will be transferred to the Ukrainian army, four of which have already been delivered.
These were brought to their country by Ukrainian pilots on March 23. The handover of the fighter jet was decided by the conservative-populist government led by Prime Minister Eduard Heger, which was overthrown in a vote of no confidence in December. Since then, she has held the position only temporarily. Therefore, according to the constitution, they do not have the power to make such fundamental foreign policy and military decisions, said Robert Fico, head of the Slovak Social Democratic Party (Smer-SD). His party has now brought criminal charges against the government for abuse of office and sabotage.
No constitutional majority for delivery
Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad and Prime Minister Heger originally announced that they would not decide without a parliamentary vote. The government could have obtained a simple majority for the supply of aircraft with parts of the opposition. But what it would have needed was a constitutional majority (three-fifths in Slovakia). The defense minister said a legal analysis had been carried out, which showed that parliament did not need to be involved.
As reported, the Ukrainian army has recently received German and British main battle tanks. The British Challenger 2 has arrived in Ukraine, writes Defense Minister Oleksiy Resnikov on Twitter. He also posted a video (see below) in which he can be seen in a tank. “These fantastic machines will soon begin their combat missions.”
