At a bank branch in Knittelfeld, about 150 lockers were broken open and emptied on Monday evening. A unique coup for Styria.
Bad news has reached many customers of the Raiffeisenbank branch in Knittelfeld these days: 150 lockers were broken into and emptied during a burglary! On Monday morning around 02:00, the previously unknown perpetrators struck. “They gained entry through a back entrance and brutally smashed the glass door,” an officer from the Knittelfeld police station told the “Krone”.
The criminals apparently targeted safe deposit boxes in the bank’s foyer, where customers with their cards also have 24-hour access to ATMs. That is why this room is not alarm-secured – unlike lockers in the heavily secured room. The police were therefore not alerted until around six o’clock in the morning when the first employee arrived at the branch. Of course, the perpetrators were already over the mountains by then.
Prey? Still unclear
Savings books are generally kept in these lockers, but sometimes customers also put other valuables in them, so it is not yet possible to say how high the damage is,” said the detective. Affected customers are now notified to record the stolen valuables.
Police are reviewing secured traces and CCTV footage. According to the police, such a case is unique in Styria in the recent past. The Knittelfeld Police Inspectorate receives information about the crime on 059 133/6310.
