A British nurse found her relationship with a patient fatal – she was summarily fired. The reason for this, however, was not only the nightly lovemaking, but also the lack of help. The man died while sitting in the car in the hospital parking lot – the woman, despite a medical emergency, did not call the ambulance.
As British media reports, in January 2022, the nurse was in the car with the man named “Patient A” when her partner collapsed. Despite his obvious ill health, she only called a colleague for help and did not dial 911.
According to the hearing earlier this week, the patient was found in the back seat of his own car at Wrexham’s Spire Hospital, with his trousers down. The tragic end: he died of heart failure and chronic kidney disease.
No ambulance, colleague came to see
However, the nurse should have known how to act in such a situation, since she herself worked in the renal ward, where she had met “Patient A” about a year earlier. Just before midnight on the day of the incident, the aforementioned colleague received a call from the nurse who was “crying and desperately begging for help while trying to explain that someone had died”.
She was immediately advised to call an ambulance. Eventually, however, the colleague drove herself to the parking lot, where she found the man only partially clothed and unconscious. Only then was the urgently needed emergency call made – but the rescuers who arrived shortly afterwards were only able to determine death.
‘He started moaning and suddenly died’
The nurse then explained to the paramedics that the man had just texted her that he was unwell, so she went to see him. She then got into the backseat with him. “He started moaning and suddenly died,” the woman said. However, she later revealed to the police that she had a sexual relationship with the patient and they also met in the parking lot in the evening.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) investigative panel concluded that the woman was disbarred for contempt for the profession: the “acts” she performed deviated significantly from the standards expected of a nurse, it said in the closing statement. Her behavior violated guidelines for clear sexual boundaries. She also endangered the patient by not contacting emergency services.
