On Tuesday evening, thunderstorms in Carinthia again brought heavy rain, hail, storms and power outages for 10,000 households.
Dark clouds rolled over Carinthia from the west in the afternoon and reached the Klagenfurt basin in the early evening. For many Carinthians, the memories of the previous evening, which had brought great destruction, were immediately awakened. While fire brigades in Lower Carinthia were still repairing the damage, severe weather warnings raised fears of the worst. Strong gusts of wind and heavy precipitation accompany the thunderstorms throughout Lower Carinthia.
10,000 households without electricity
It was not only temporarily dark in the Gurktal and in the Geländetal near Feld am See – the power went out everywhere in Carinthia. “At the moment, 10,000 households are without power. Central and eastern Carinthia have been particularly hard hit. During the day we were able to repair the damage from yesterday’s thunderstorms, but work had to be temporarily halted due to the increased risk,” explains Robert Schmaranz from Kärnten Netz. “Our technicians are back at work outside, but the situation is still very bad dynamic.”
He therefore cannot yet estimate when the power supply will be restored. “Today (Tuesday, please note) we are still working intensively to help as many households as possible,” says Schmaranz. “Tomorrow (Wednesday, please note) we will have a better overview, then we can also estimate how long we need to fully restore the power supply for everyone.”
According to information from the national alarm and warning center LAWZ, the fire brigades are currently on numerous missions throughout the country. The sirens also sounded in Klagenfurt around 6:30 p.m., while the precipitation slowly decreased in the far west of Carinthia. In the Lavanttal, there were already 40 firefighting operations at 7 p.m. – Griffen and Bleiburg in particular were hit. There was again storm damage, especially in places where trees had fallen yesterday.
“Thank God the wind wasn’t that dramatic, but many tarpaulins on roofs that were tied by the firefighters today were ripped away again,” explains district fire chief Patrick Skubel. “As of 6 p.m. yesterday, 800 firefighters are on duty. It is unbelievable what our emergency services are doing, we hope that nothing will happen again tomorrow. from Kärnten Netz will also be represented.
Tree fell on car
Two women and a small child had a breakdown in Stockenboier Landstraße near Zlan. The heavy rain and storm caused a tree to fall onto the road and directly onto their car. The vehicle sustained extensive damage, the occupants were unharmed.
