Hawaii’s governor has assured that the death toll will continue to rise. There are still several active outbreaks on the island and firefighters continue to work to put out fires.
The death toll from fires that have ravaged the Hawaiian island of Maui since Tuesday has risen to 89 and about 1,000 people remain missing, Hawaii Governor Josh Green said.
“There have been 89 deaths. The number will continue to rise. We want to prepare people for that,” Green said in a video posted to his social networking account X (formerly Twitter).
A total of 1,418 people are in the six temporary shelters set up to care for those affected by the worst natural disaster the US archipelago has experienced in its history, also according to official data.
The strong drought that has ravaged the islands in recent months, as well as the strong winds from Hurricane Dora, have caused the flames to spread at a much higher speed, according to local authorities, making extinguishing work difficult.
Several active pockets remain on the island and firefighters continue to work to put out fires in Lahaina, Pulehu/Kihei and Upcountry Maui.
