The holiday in Switzerland ended in a terrible way for a group of five Austrians. The avid paddlers were paddling through the Rhine Gorge in the canton of Graubünden when one of the Canadian canoes crashed into a rock and the crew – a 10-year-old boy and his 48-year-old mother – were thrown into the water.
The group of five from Tyrol climbed into the Vorderrhein at around 10:30 am on Tuesday at around 10:30 am at the train station of Versam (canton of Graubünden), divided into three Canadian canoes. The incident subsequently took place in the Chrummwag area, the Cantonal Police said.

Members of the group rescued the ten-year-old and brought him to safety on the coast. Initially there was no trace of the 48-year-old mother, but she was discovered a little later 200 meters downstream and pulled out of the water.
investigation started
Those present immediately began resuscitation and alerted the Swiss air rescue service REGA, which flew the seriously injured Austrian to the Graubünden Canton Hospital for further treatment in the capital Chur. The cantonal police, together with the public prosecutor’s office, have launched an investigation into the course of the accident.
