Nine people were injured in a collision between two double-decker buses in Lower Austria on Wednesday evening. The rescue of a seriously injured Styrian (24) was difficult.
There were 60 people each in both buses when the rear-end collision suddenly occurred around 6 p.m. in the industrial center of Lower Austria South, in the municipality of Laxenburg. The 24-year-old was seriously injured in the collision and was unable to get out of the bus from the top floor. It also could not be carried into the vehicle via the narrow staircase.
Therefore, a special rescue platform has been installed and an access opening has been made using hydraulic rescue equipment. The man was then transferred to a spineboard and lifted from the bus.
With the aid of a crane truck belonging to the Fire Service Association of Lower Austria, stationed at the Mödling Fire Department, the buses involved in the accident were parked safely off the roadway in an adjacent car park. Nine vehicles and 36 emergency services from two fire departments were deployed. The ambulance service and the police were also present.
The reason for the rear-end collision was the emergency braking of a 42-year-old bus driver who apparently wanted to avoid a collision with a truck coming from a company driveway.
There was already a serious bus accident at the beginning of August. 18 people were injured in the accident on German Autobahn 2 near Peine, east of Hanover. The coach went off the road from Austria to Norway and overturned.
