A wedding party in Nigeria was abruptly ended by authorities. A total of 200 men were said to have been arrested. They held a “gay wedding” on Monday at a hotel near the coastal town of Warri in the southern Delta state, police said on Tuesday.
Among those arrested were the two men dressed as bride and groom. Most of the men taken into custody were wearing women’s clothing, the report said.
Same-sex marriage is prohibited
After further investigations are completed, those arrested will be formally charged, a police spokesman said. Africa’s most populous country, with a population of about 220 million, passed a law in 2014 banning same-sex unions or marriages. People who break the law risk a prison sentence of fourteen years in the West African country.
