Due to monument protection, the American court wants to ban the ‘Titanic’ expedition

Date:

A company wants to plan a new expedition to the shipwreck of the ‘Titanic’ in the spring of next year – but the US judiciary wants to prevent this. The authorities refer to an international agreement in which the shipwreck was declared a burial place.

The company RMS Titanic Inc. wanted to launch an unmanned expedition to the “Titanic” in May next year. Artifacts must also be brought to light, but many photos of the ship must also be taken. According to the company, they are interested in “the interior of the wreck, where the decay has created fissures large enough for a remote-controlled vehicle to penetrate the hull without affecting the current structure.”

Lawyers insist on monument protection
But the US court, which wants to prevent this project, is not about the fact that the wreck could be damaged, but about respect for the approximately 1,500 people who lost their lives in the shipwreck. Although RMS Titanic Inc. has the salvage rights to the wreck, the company’s operation would violate federal law and a treaty with Britain. The latter is considering treating the wreck as a monument.

“RMST does not have the liberty to violate this federal statute as it is enacted, but it does intend to do so,” US attorneys said in a court document filed Friday. The company’s plans would “deprive the sunken ship of the protection Congress afforded it.”

The company hopes to recover the Marconi telegraph device
The company planned to recover artifacts from the debris field and “possibly detached objects in the wreckage”. It was also hoped that items from the Marconi room would be found, “but only if such items are not attached to the wreck itself,” the company said. This room contains, among other things, the ship’s radio, a wireless Marconi telegraph device. used to send distress signals from the sinking Titanic after colliding with an iceberg.
