Researchers have discovered a mysterious round object on the ocean floor near Alaska that no one knows what it is. The shiny gold object has a diameter of over ten centimeters and has a crack at the bottom.
US marine researchers discovered it last week using a remote-controlled research vehicle at a depth of 3,300 meters on a rock in the Gulf of Alaska. While online services speculated whether it could be an alien egg, researchers recovered the object to examine it in the laboratory.
Is an object the shell of an egg?
“As the cameras zoomed in, scientists wondered if it could be a dead sponge, coral or the shell of an egg,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said. Since then, the find has been called the ‘golden ball’ or the ‘golden egg’, the American authority said.
“We were able to recover the ‘golden ball’ and bring it back to the ship, but we still cannot identify it,” NOAA said. It’s unclear whether it belongs to a known species, represents a new species or is an unknown life stage of an existing species, said NOAA coordinator Sam Candio.
is to find „biological origin”
The only thing that is certain is that the find is of “biological origin,” Candio says. But the discovery shows “how little we know about our own planet and how much we still have to learn about our ocean (…),” he added.
