The debate about the war in the Middle East has long reached Salzburg. After demonstrations against the violent clashes in and around Israel have already taken place in other Austrian capitals, the first pro-Palestinian demonstration took place in Salzburg on Saturday.
With Arabic music, waving Palestinian flags and posters, about 200 people gathered on the Residenzplatz in Mozart’s city on Saturday afternoon. And loudly expressed their pro-Palestinian position with the slogan ‘Free Palestine’. In addition to men wearing Palestine scarves, women and children also attended the meeting. Some of them cried and held hands for comfort as the host reported on the Middle East. He then invited a Muslim scholar onto the stage to recite from the Quran.
The police put an end to the heated argument
Because there had already been riots at other rallies in Austria, about 15 police officers took up positions around the Residenzplatz during the approximately hour-long demonstration. But only at the beginning of the rally was police intervention necessary: a passerby started a short, heated argument with some demo visitors. After this intervention there was silence. In addition to the demo participants, dozens of spectators were also drawn to the Residenzplatz. Attracted by the music and the slogans, they filmed the landscape in Salzburg’s old town with their mobile phones. Before the crowd dispersed, organizers distributed balloons to participants, who then released them into the air.
Shortly after the outbreak of war in Israel, police protection against Jewish institutions was increased in Salzburg. According to Elie Rosen, president of the Jewish Community, some members of the Salzburg synagogue fear rising anti-Semitism in the country.
