Israel accuses Hamas of using the hospital as a protective shield for its terror headquarters. The army is now announcing ‘tactical pauses’ in the north and escape routes.
Al-Shifa Hospital is the largest and most important hospital in Gaza City. The name translates as “House of Healing”. Many people there seek not only healing, but also a refuge – the building is completely overcrowded, people sleep on the floor in the corridors.
“House of Healing”
The hospital is caught between two fronts, including that of propaganda. Palestinian health authorities accuse Israel of attacking the hospital and are expected to halt operations on Saturday. Israel, on the other hand, accuses Hamas of using the “House of Healing” as a protective shield for the tunnel system and terror headquarters.
Now fighting is intensifying around the hospital, which has reportedly already been hit by rockets. According to Israeli government spokesman Eylon Levy, the facility could lose its protected status and become a legitimate target – precisely because Hamas’s headquarters are in the basement.
Two escape corridors to the south
On Saturday, Israel once again promised residents of the northern Gaza Strip two safe escape corridors to the south. In addition, a “tactical” break in fighting was announced for the refugee camp near the town of Jabalja. “Military activities” will be suspended there for a few hours – for “humanitarian purposes,” as the military has announced. The army also asked Palestinian civilians to contact them if Hamas prevented them from fleeing.
Hate messages at the summit in Saudi Arabia
At an Islamic-Arab summit in Saudi Arabia, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was once again given a platform for his messages of hate. He called on Muslim countries to impose oil and goods sanctions against Israel. “There is no other way than to oppose Israel,” Raisi said. And further: “We kiss the hands of Hamas for its resistance against Israel,” Raisi said of the terrorist organization that literally slaughtered some 1,200 people in Israel on October 7.
Qatar is trying to arrange the release of hostages kidnapped by Hamas, according to its emir.
