Last night, horrific scenes took place in Fohnsdorf: a mentally ill man, who was clearly paranoid, injured himself with a knife with a 30 centimeter long blade – while his four-year-old child was with him! The 43-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries, but fortunately the child was unharmed.
It may have been the mentally ill man himself who, in a fit of paranoia, alerted the police around 8 p.m. on Saturday because a person was reportedly lurking at the entrance to the house.
When police arrived, officers did not notice a suspicious person, but heard a child screaming from the apartment in an apartment building. The situation was completely unclear; the police assumed there was an accident in a closed apartment and called for reinforcements. The officers forced open the front door.
Father had a child in his care this weekend
The 43-year-old was seen in the bathroom and appeared to show signs of severe mental impairment. With him was his four-year-old son, whom he had to care for all weekend. The 43-year-old held a knife with a blade about 30 centimeters long in his hand and used it to wound himself several times.
Fortunately, police were eventually able to pull the child out of the bathroom and out of harm’s way.
The man then barricaded himself in the bathroom, after which the southern negotiating group, the Cobra task force and the SIG (rapid intervention group) were informed and called in.
Two colleagues managed to contact the 43-year-old on site and by telephone. However, the man could not be persuaded to give up. In the meantime, brief visual contact could be made with the 43-year-old. It was discovered that the man repeatedly held the knife to his neck and cut his forearms several times. He also repeatedly fell on the knife blade.
Numerous knife wounds
At around 10:23 p.m., the EKO Cobra intervened and arrested the 43-year-old. The bleeding man was searched by police ambulance personnel and then received first aid from the emergency doctor. The 43-year-old was taken to LKH Judenburg with numerous life-threatening stab wounds.
Fortunately, the child was physically unharmed; psychologically it must have experienced terrible things. It was handed over to the grandfather after consultation with the Murtal district administration.
