Long-distance trains also planned – Munich Airport resumed operations

Date:

After a six-hour interruption due to freezing rain, Munich Airport resumed operations on Tuesday. The first plane from New York landed at noon. During the day, the first long-distance trains from Munich to Austria will also run again.

Initially, “very few trains” are planned on the routes to Salzburg and Kufstein, a railway spokeswoman said. During the day, improvements will also take place in the train connections between the Bavarian capital, Stuttgart and Nuremberg. According to Deutsche Bahn, the situation in regional transport around Munich is also slowly improving. Trains are running again on various external S-Bahn routes in the area. In order to make the routes passable again more quickly, the railway has ordered additional evacuation vehicles from other states to Bavaria. However, the persistent winter weather and freezing rain made the clearing work more difficult. Passengers are also asked not to make non-essential travel until Wednesday at the earliest.

Hundreds of travelers were stranded
Hundreds of travelers were stranded at Munich airport on Tuesday and were provided with food and drinks. Camp beds were also available. Heavy snowfall in large parts of Bavaria had already seriously affected airport operations this weekend. There had been no take-offs or landings in Munich since the operation began at 6 a.m. on Tuesday. Airport staff had already announced the interruption on Monday evening, citing the predicted freezing rain.

Although operations have now resumed, passengers should still expect “massive restrictions.” An airport spokesman said about 100 more of the 770 originally planned takeoffs and landings were expected in the afternoon.

A new stop cannot be ruled out
The German Weather Service (DWD) expected danger from icy and slippery conditions in the coming nights, especially in the south and east of Bavaria. According to the spokesperson, it is difficult to estimate whether there could be another temporary suspension of flight operations in Munich.
