Construction of the F126, the largest German warship since World War II, begins

Date:

Germany is arming itself with its 100 billion special assets and has ordered four new frigates for the navy. The F126 class includes four warships – each 166 meters long, the largest since World War II. The ships, which are as long as destroyers, are packed with modern technology.

Compared to previous German warships, such as the Brandenburg class F123, the new ships are more than 20 meters longer. Even American Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are ten meters shorter. The start of construction work at the Peene shipyard in Wolgast in northeastern Germany attracted a lot of attention. Dutch shipbuilder Damen has won the contract as main contractor and is promoting the project together with shipyards in Wolgast, Kiel and Hamburg and the French technology group Thales. The first F126 frigate is expected to take off in 2028 and will have impressive firepower.
