Thousands of people, opposition supporters, gathered at a rally of the pro-democracy movement ProGlas in central Belgrade on Saturday. “These elections must be annulled,” it said.
The group of intellectuals, artists and writers, who had called for voter participation during the election campaign, joined the opposition coalition ‘Serbia against Violence’ in calling for repeat elections at the beginning of this week.
After speaking directly to the hospital
“These elections must be annulled,” said Marinika Tepić. The top official of the opposition association, who has been on hunger strike for thirteen days, climbed to the podium visibly weak, only with the help of her party friends. She reduced her speech to this single sentence. Immediately after the performance, Tepić was taken to the hospital.
“This is our country, this is the country for all our citizens”
The student group “Borba”, which had also joined the protest after a 24-hour blockade of one of Belgrade’s busiest streets, marched with a song by the Belgrade rock group Ekaterina Velika: “This is our country, this is the country for all our citizens”, through the streets. “We don’t accept it,” the group chanted.
Violent takeover possible
Pro-government media reported that rally participants planned to take power by force.
According to official information, President Aleksandar Vučić’s right-wing ruling party SNS clearly won the parliamentary and local elections on December 17. However, international election observers reported numerous irregularities during the voting.
