Target of attack unclear – Houthi explosive boat exploded in the Red Sea

Date:

An unmanned Houthi rebel boat has exploded in the Red Sea, according to the US Navy. It was loaded with explosives and detonated on a major shipping route. It was initially unclear what the purpose of the attack was.

The head of US naval forces in the Middle East, Brad Cooper, said the Houthis’ drone boat traveled about 50 miles (80 kilometers) into the Red Sea before it exploded. It came within a few miles of merchant ships and U.S. Navy ships. The boat caused no damage.

The Houthis are backed by Iran and have expressed solidarity with the militant terrorist organization Hamas in the Gaza Strip in their fight against Israel. They say they have already attacked ships with a connection to Israel several times. So far they have mainly attacked with missiles and drones. An international military alliance is currently being sought to protect merchant ships.

Cargo ship hijacked off the coast of Somalia
Recently, the US Navy sank three small rebel boats and killed several attackers who attempted to forcibly take possession of a Danish container ship (see video above).

Another incident has now occurred off the coast of Somalia in the Arabian Sea. A cargo ship carrying fifteen people from India was hijacked there. The Indian Navy announced on Friday that it had begun the pursuit and was closely monitoring the situation.

On Thursday evening, five to six unknown armed people boarded the ship and were diverted. The navy, which has stepped up its surveillance after the recent attacks, says it has already contacted the ship’s crew. Somalia is located in the Horn of Africa and is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Aden and to the east by the Arabian Sea. The Gulf of Aden connects the Red Sea.
