Some Lower Austrians were suddenly woken from their sleep on Thursday night: an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 occurred southwest of Gloggnitz. The earthquake was strongly felt in the vicinity of the epicenter. “That was intense,” a woman from Lower Austria wrote on Facebook.
Around 3 a.m., the earth suddenly shook – so strongly that objects fell over, beds shook, and cracks even appeared in the walls of buildings. “We were woken from our sleep. “It was tough today, just before three in the morning,” reports a krone.at user from Ternitz in the early morning hours: “There are now cracks in my stairs. The earthquake was very powerful this time.”
The earthquake was felt not only in Lower Austria, but also in Styria and partly even in Vienna and Upper Austria.
Series of earthquakes in Tyrol
Statistics from Geosphere Austria show that earthquakes are currently not uncommon in Austria. Accordingly, from January 1 to 26 alone, 39 earthquakes were felt in this country. However, in an average month, only about five noticeable earthquakes can be expected.
Recently there was a series of earthquakes in the Pillerseetal area of Tyrol. The strongest earthquake in this series was felt on January 23 with a magnitude of 3.9.
