If you want to fly environmentally friendly, you can now co-finance the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel from the AUA with a surcharge on the ticket. Previously it was only possible to pay money for CO₂ compensation projects when purchasing the ticket. However, the new surcharge is significantly higher.
If you want to compensate your CO₂ emissions for a flight to Frankfurt with climate protection projects, you have to pay 1.71 euros – for sustainable jet fuel you will be charged 53.55 euros.
CO₂ emissions saved on 333 flights
AUA buys sustainable kerosene (Sustainable Aviation Fuel/SAF) produced by OMV in Austria. The first step is about 1500 tons. Although this corresponds to less than a thousandth of AUA’s annual requirement, according to AUA’s calculations, it still saves the CO₂ emissions of 333 flights from Vienna to London (3750 tons of CO₂) with an Airbus A320.
Should demand increase, additional SAF can be obtained from the Lufthansa Group. The Lufthansa Group, parent company of Austrian Airlines, is the largest buyer of sustainable aviation fuels in Europe, according to the AUA on Monday.
