Food test: – Harmful ingredients discovered in fish sticks

Date:

German testers found harmful substances in the breading of the popular frozen meal. The Vienna Market Office explains how dangerous this really is. And: How many sticks can a four-year-old child eat with confidence.

Children love it – the square fish with crispy breadcrumbs is a classic for many families. But a study by the German consumer organization Stiftung Warentest set alarm bells ringing among mothers and fathers. Only two of the nine fish sticks tested can be recommended by the experts. All others contain too many pollutants.

Eleven classic fish fingers, four fried fish fingers and four vegan alternatives were examined. In particular, the share of the fat contaminant 3-MCPD in the breadcrumbs was negative.

How great is the danger really?
But does this mean you can’t eat fish sticks anymore? “Despite this investigation, there is no cause for concern. All pollutants remain within limits,” said Alexander Hengl, spokesperson for the Vienna Market Office. None of the tested products are harmful to health.

All quantities of contaminants are within the tolerance range of the directive, defined by the European Food Safety Authority. According to experts, a four-year-old child can eat three fish sticks and still remain within the normal range.
