Russian troops say they have captured the next city in eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian army announced that it had withdrawn from the village of Lastochkyne to better control the westward advance.
The village of Lastochkyne is located about five kilometers northwest of Avdiivka. As reported, at least two people have been killed in Russian nighttime airstrikes. The Ukrainian armed forces are currently on the defensive in the east. Russia is deploying a lot of personnel and artillery at the front to gain ground (see video above).
Many politicians no longer expect the war in Ukraine to end quickly. Neither the Russian nor Ukrainian armies are able to achieve their goals, Czech President Petr Pavel said. “We really have a deficit, not only in terms of possible support to Ukraine, but especially in terms of securing our own combat and defense capabilities,” he said, referring to the EU. The mutual fatigue resulting from the conflict will probably lead to negotiations sooner or later.
152 Czechs were allowed to fight in Ukraine
Pavel says he supports Ukraine’s move to restore full control over its territory. Since taking office in March 2023, he has had a total of twenty Czechs fight in the Ukrainian army. Service in foreign armed forces is prohibited by law, but exceptions may be granted. Pavel’s predecessor, Miloš Zeman, gave 132 approvals during his term.
