All of Europe was looking for little Danka from Serbia – and hoped for a happy ending. That hope was buried Thursday. The girl is dead, the body is said to have been dumped in a landfill by two men after the child was allegedly run over.
Was it a quick reaction or cool thought to save your own head? The more details become known about the death of little Danka – she would have been two years old on May 6 – the more tragic the case becomes, which affects the whole of Europe.
On March 26, the girl disappeared in a brief and unnoticed moment from her parents’ garden in a village near the city of Bor. A short time later the child was probably already dead. It is not yet entirely clear what exactly happened, the investigation is in full swing.
Men confessed
In any case, two men confessed on Thursday to killing the girl. According to reports in the Serbian media, the suspects are two 50-year-old employees at a public water company. On the day of the disappearance, they drove a company car – reportedly a Fiat Panda – on Radomir Putinka Street.
According to reports, the driver was clearly traveling too fast for the road conditions. The girl was hit by the car. What happened next is almost unbelievable. According to their own statements, the two men put the girl’s body – it is still unclear whether Danka was already dead at that time – in the trunk of the car and drove to a nearby dump. There they threw the child into a ditch.
The wrong path led to Vienna
In the meantime, a search was underway throughout Europe for the missing girl. For a while a trail even led to Vienna. A video emerged showing two women and the suspected missing child. However, it turned out that it wasn’t Danka.
Then on Thursday the big impact: as Serbian President Alexander Vučić announced, the two men were arrested. DNA traces of Danka, which were found on the blood-stained car, led to suspicion among the two workers.
Whether their version that the child died in an accident is true is the subject of the current investigation. According to Serbian media reports, the workers also said they were drunk during the incident. The statements would not exactly match. The fact is, however, that Danka’s body has not yet been found. There are currently four excavators in use at the landfill…
