An imposing banquet hall with elegant black walls decorated with mythological motifs from the Trojan War: this is the latest discovery in the archaeological city of Pompeii in southern Italy.
The chamber was recently discovered during excavations at the archaeological site of the Mount Vesuvius volcano and can now be viewed in all its glory, the Ministry of Culture in Rome announced on Thursday.
Images of heroes and gods
The hall is decorated with frescoes and mosaics dating back to the third century. This is evident from the artistic quality of the paintings and the choice of subjects. The overriding theme is heroism. Heroes and gods from the Trojan War are depicted.
Besides Helen and Paris, who is referred to in a Greek inscription between the two figures by his other name ‘Alexandros’, the figure of Cassandra, daughter of Priam, appears together with Apollo on the walls of the hall.
The photos were for the entertainment of the guests
Mythological figures in the paintings of the living and social areas of Roman houses had the function of receiving guests and providing material for conversations and reflections on existence.
The hall is approximately 15 meters long and six meters wide and leads to a courtyard that resembles a service corridor with a long staircase leading to the first floor of the house.
Buried under ash during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius
Pompeii and its inhabitants were buried under ash, mud and lava when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. However, the city was partly preserved. The city was rediscovered in the 18th century. The excavation site is one of the most popular sights in Italy and there are always sensational finds.
