While sun worshipers are already looking forward to the beach season, the water quality in Italian seaside resorts is also improving. As a visible sign of this, the blue flag will fly on 485 beaches this summer, ten places more than last year.
The European environmental foundation ‘Foundation for Environmental Education’ (FEE), founded in 1981 and which has awarded the prize since 1985, announced this year’s Italian winners on Tuesday. Accordingly, the 485 beaches in 236 municipalities include 34 seaside resorts in Liguria – the region has received the most blue flags.
24 seaside resorts in the southern Italian region of Apulia and another 20 in the southern Italian regions of Campania and Calabria also received the coveted flag. Twelve towns in Trentino-South Tyrol were also recognized for the excellent water quality of their lakes.
The assessment is carried out across Europe by national organizations according to uniform criteria. Compliance with the standards can be checked during the season by means of random checks.
