The Reumannplatz in Vienna-Favoriten has recently made several negative headlines. Sunday evening there was a lively but peaceful celebration, as a reporter from the “Krone” reader describes. Hundreds of Austrian-Turks took over the square to cheer on Galatasaray Istanbul football club, who were crowned Turkish champions for the 24th time.
Only in the final round of the Süper Lig did defending champion Galatasaray secure first place. He won 3-1 at Konyaspor and maintained his three-point lead over city rivals Fenerbahce. The second-placed side won 6-0 against relegated Istanbulspor, but they could only have pushed Galatasaray off the top if the record champions lost at the end of the season.
After the end of the competition there was no stopping the Favoriten district in Vienna, hundreds of Austrian-Turks stormed the Reumannplatz. There was exuberant celebration, dancing and singing. A gigantic banner of the traditional Istanbul club was unfurled and dominated the square.
Warnings about “irrelevant” flags and speeches
“The mood was very peaceful,” said a reader reporter from the “Krone”. Most fans would have followed the rules. Warnings had previously been issued ‘so that no irrelevant flags or speeches were made’. There was only one Fenerbahçe fan who wanted to cause trouble. “But he was stopped before there was any trouble,” the reader reporter said.
“It’s always been that way.”
Muhammed Yüksek, SPÖ district councilor in Favoriten and an avid Galatasaray fan himself, was at Reumannplatz and celebrating. Even if Fenerbahce had won, there would have been celebrations at Reumannplatz. “It’s always been like this, even when I was young,” he wrote on X.
Police were present
Numerous police officers were on duty and present on every corner of the square. Due to the bad weather, the partying community dispersed early – at the same time a thunderstorm rolled towards Vienna.
The exuberant party was over around 9:30 p.m., Yüksek wrote on a photo of the square that had been cleared out again.
