An elderly person in a wheelchair was put on the wrong plane by a Nuremberg airport employee and landed in Albania instead of Athens. “The cause was an unfortunate combination of circumstances,” an airport spokesperson said on Friday.
There were also communication problems with the non-German or English-speaking customer. “We deeply regret this incident.”
The 83-year-old actually wanted to go to Greece to visit family, but ended up in Tirana, the woman’s daughter told the “Nürnberger Nachrichten”.
The plane ticket would not have been valid at all
After arriving in Albania, she received a call from her mother and then arranged accommodation and a flight to Athens. The daughter cannot understand how this momentous confusion could have happened. Her mother did not have a ticket for the flight to Albania, she told the newspaper.
Airport offered to cover all costs
According to the airport spokesperson, the exact circumstances have been examined internally and the procedure has been adjusted so that such a situation cannot occur again. The 83-year-old’s daughter contacted the airport via email after the incident on May 22.
The airport then immediately contacted the passenger’s daughter, apologized and offered assistance. The airport therefore offered to cover further transportation, a flight booking and all costs incurred.
